Source Code was one of those titles.I have 5 x 8TB HDDs. In those cases, there can be region or even retailer specific pressings, and the forums sometimes have the right answers, and sometimes don't. Second biggest issue is those rare Blu-ray discs that try to trick MakeMKV by having like three dozen playlists, each of which has the movie's chapters in a totally illogical order, except for one, but it's never clear which one is correct unless you play them back. My drive struggles with some of them, no matter how clean they are. The biggest issue with ripping UHD is those damn 3-layer discs. My two primary playback devices (Nvidia Shield and LG C1, in different rooms) both have Plex apps that seem to be able to playback everything, so no real time transcoding is required. I rip discs with MakeMKV, and I don't compress them at all. At 1000+ titles, it took quite some time, but it seems to be fine now. That said, I don't know how, but I somehow corrupted my Plex database a couple weeks ago and had to rebuild it from scratch. I don't fully understand it, but I found a tutorial for running it via Docker and never looked back. At the time I set it up, there was some weird change between Synology DS6 and DS7, where Plex's permissions changed or something. I run Plex on it, but I run it in a Docker container.

I was lucky enough to snag an LG SATA Bluray drive WH16NS40, one of the last drives released with unlocked firmware that allows 4k bluray rips, but unfortunately I don't think the. I recently upgraded my desktop to a 12700k and 3080, so DVD encodes take <5 minutes on average, HD blurays 20 minutes, and 4K blurays about an hour. mkv, mkvtoolnix if I need to do any remuxing or conjoining of multiple tracks/sources, then upload to a network attached HDD. Workflow: makemkv for the raw rip, everything run through Handbrake on a default preset based on input res that encodes to. I'm also kinda anal about the thumbnails/backgrounds/posters as I don't like some of the default ones, but it's really not that bad.

The only "learning curve" really is the naming/ordering scheme for TV shows and the metadata/media matching which can sometimes take some finagling depending on the title.

I use plex myself hosted on my desktop, though I've considered buying a dedicated NAS. Yeah, it'll even find the DTS sub-encodes for master audio tracks, subtitles, chapter labels. Pretty much everything supports x264/x265, so you shouldn't have any video concerns, for audio though, ideally you would have a receiver or soundbar you can passthrough to, otherwise, you can always add a second compatibility audio stream of AAC or AC3. As long as you know what formats are compatible with your devices, you can encode your media with the necessary video/audio compatibility. It's great.Īnd since you're just starting your library, the fear of transcoding should be a completely non-issue. You can also setup a custom account for them that only gives them access to what you want them to view.

I don't have to figure out how the hell they're going to be able to watch their favorite show or movie on a long car ride, because I can just download anything in my library with the touch of a button, and have it accessible for offline viewing. Not to mention, Plex on a tablet or mobile device is invaluable with kids. You can use it on any device and your entire library is managed on the server side so all of your progress is saved and sync'd across all devices.
